       HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE

  

  

WHAT IS HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE (HHW)?  HHW is any material (liquid, solid, gas) discarded from the home that, because of its chemical nature, poses a health threat to humans or the environment if handled or disposed of improperly.

   

HHW may be labeled toxic, poison, corrosive, reactive, flammable, combustible, or irritant. Some common HHW items include:

  • paints

  • pesticides

  • pool chemicals

  • kitchen and bathroom cleaners

  • medications

  • nail polish remover

  • disinfectants

  • lighter fluid

  • electronics

  • shoe polish

  • car wax

  • automobile fluids (anti-freeze, transmission fluid, oil, etc.)

  • moth balls

  • mercury thermometers

  • propane tanks

  • helium tanks

  • fire extinguishers

HOW TO DISPOSE OF HHW?  The Burbank Recycle Center accepts the following HHW:
  • mercury thermometers
  • fluorescent tubes
  • electronics
  • oily rags

Car batteries are accepted at many stores that sell them.

   

Burbank residents have the following options for disposing of other types of HHW:

     HHW Roundups
    for a list of upcoming HHW Roundups sponsored by the County of Los Angeles and free to all LA County residents.

  2. Call 1-800-98-TOXIC for information about the City of Los Angeles Randall Street S.A.F.E. Collection Center located at 11025 Randall Street in Sun Valley.  The Center is open Saturday, Sunday, and Monday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m, click here for map and further information  S.A.F.E. Collection Centers.

  3. The SAFE Collection Center on the Glendale / Los Angeles board at 3400 Colorado Bl . is open on Saturdays and Sundays, 9 a . m . -3 p . m .   Call 1-800-98 TOXIC (1-800-988-6942) or the Burbank Recycle Center , 818-238-3900, for further information .  

All HHW centers and roundups are closed on holidays .     State law limits the quantity of HHW accepted at all roundups to 15 gallons or 125 pounds.  Please   consolidate as many HHW items, under the legal limit as stated, as is possible in one trip.   HHW roundups are not intended for business waste. 

Businesses with less than 220 pounds a month of hazardous waste to dispose of may call 1-213-485-3764 for “small quantity generators” information .   The SAFE Collection Center in Sun Valley accepts business hazardous waste one day a month by appointment for a small charge .

Effective February 9, 2006, the State of California declared that virtually anything with a battery, circuit board or plug must be disposed of as hazardous waste .   Electronic waste (e-waste) and universal waste (u-waste) contain lead, mercury or other heavy metals—elements that, if improperly disposed of, can endanger public health and harm the environment .

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE includes both e-waste and u-waste.   E-waste includes but is not limited to:  computers, printers, monitors, networking equipment, TVs, monitors, cell phones, telephones, radios, stereos, VCRs, video games, electronic toys, etc .    U-waste includes batteries, fluorescent bulbs, thermometers, thermostats, etc .   The Recycle Center accepts e-waste and u-waste in household quantities or approximately 100 lbs . / year. 

E-waste:

O          The SAFE collection centers accept up to six piece of e-waste .

O          The Burbank Recycle Center accepts household quantities only or approximately 100 lbs . /year of e-waste and u-waste from Burbank residents and businesses .

Waste not accepted at HHW roundups includes:  explosives, ammunition, tires, bio-medical waste, trash or radioactive material .

Please call the Burbank Recycle Center at 818-238-3900, M-F, 8 a . m . – 5 p . m . for questions about hazardous waste .

Remember!  It is against the law to transport more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste to any collection site.  Please plan your trips to collection sites so that one round trip load does not exceed these limits.
